This MSc Program aims at the students’ scientific training and specialization in methodologies of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics, which can be applied in various fields, including cancer, infectious diseases, genetic diseases, toxicology, forensic medicine, archaeology, paleontology and detection of genetically modified organisms. Students are trained in basic and advanced biomolecule analysis techniques, genomics and bioinformatics
Emphasis is placed on the students’ acquisition of laboratory experience through their participation in the Department’s laboratories, which cover various research fields, within the frame of the basic and the specialized courses of the MSc Program. Scholarships are offered allowing the students’ participation in scientific conferences and the publication of research results obtained as part of their diploma thesis. In addition, the obligatory experimental thesis offers the necessary hands-on experience, scientific thinking and presentation skills to the students who wish to pursue PhD studies or seek a job in the private sector.
Teaching is performed by faculty members of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology as well as by external collaborators, whenever this is necessary, in order for the highest level of training to be ensured. Given the importance of versatile skills development at the postgraduate level, the students are provided with the chance to attend specialized lectures - seminars in communication and quality assurance by experienced lecturers.
The postgraduate students are encouraged to develop their personal vision and to implement the obtained skills in order to design experimental approaches in a wide range of applications.
The proposed program aims to meet most of the needs that have arisen because of the lack of highly trained staff in the abovementioned fields, by providing postgraduate students with the expertise they need to have so that they can pursue careers in research centers and laboratories in the public and private sector, in higher education institutions, in diagnostic centers, in biotechnology companies, in technology and environmental parks as well as in environmental and food quality control companies.
